Serverless encrypted group chat over BitTorrent. The magnet link is the invite

ScreenshotScreenshotScreenshotScreenshotScreenshot

Torrent Chat by Team of Monkeys .com is decentralized chat over BitTorrent. Every chat room is a torrent, and its magnet link is the invite: anyone with the link is in the room. There is no Torrent Chat server. Peers find each other through the BitTorrent DHT, local peer discovery and, optionally, public trackers, then sync the conversation directly.

How it works

  • New room: give it a name and the magnet link is copied to your clipboard.
  • Send the link any way you like: a chat app, email (the Email invite button), a QR code or a sticky note.
  • Your friend clicks Join with magnet and pastes it. Chat.

Private by design

  • Messages are end-to-end encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a key that lives only inside the magnet link.
  • Every message is signed with your own Ed25519 identity, so no room member can forge someone else's messages.
  • DHT nodes and trackers see only the room's infohash and your IP address, never what you write.
  • No accounts, no servers, no telemetry.

Built on real BitTorrent

  • Peer discovery through the Mainline DHT, local service discovery on your LAN, UPnP/NAT-PMP port mapping, PEX and (switchable) public trackers.
  • Chat syncs over the BitTorrent peer wire through a BEP 10 extension. Messages are gossiped onward, so two members can talk through a third, and late joiners receive the full history from whoever is online.
  • Each room keeps a readable chat.txt transcript on every member's disk.

Good to know: messages are stored only on peers, so someone in the room has to be online for them to sync. Anyone with the link can read and post, so share it only with the people you want in the room. As with any BitTorrent client, your IP address is visible to the swarm.
