Edit, validate, format and save XML files locally.
XML Editor by Loamstack is a local XML source editor for Linux. Open documents with the native file chooser, edit literal XML with syntax highlighting, check XML syntax, format supported documents and inspect an element outline. No account is required for local document processing.
Source editing retains qualified names, namespace declarations, comments, CDATA and numeric text. Supported source saves preserve the original encoding and byte-order mark. UTF-8 BOM, UTF-16LE BOM and existing CRLF line endings have been verified in this Linux release. Formatting changes layout and is not a promise of byte-identical output. Keep backups and check saved output before relying on it.
Invalid XML stays editable and cannot replace the original source through Save. Ordinary inspection rejects DOCTYPE and does not fetch external file or network entities. Explicit local DTD mode is a separate tool. This listing focuses on source editing; it does not promise advanced schema, query, transformation or large-file workflows on Linux.
Known limitation: dense namespace metadata can cause labels to overlap in the outline. Use the source view when the outline is difficult to read.
Document tabs, edited XML, history and tool settings can persist in local app storage without automatic expiry. Clearing app storage removes these local sessions; it does not delete separately saved files. Save important documents before clearing storage.
Document processing takes place on your device. Release builds send limited app-start analytics to PostHog and sanitized lifecycle/error diagnostics to Sentry. Reports use a random app-installation identifier stored locally and a fresh launch identifier. Person-profile creation is disabled. Reports exclude document names, paths and contents. Providers receive ordinary network information, including IP addresses; PostHog can retain IP addresses and derive approximate location. The app does not request precise device location and has no in-app analytics opt-out. See https://xmlfile.tools/privacy for details and https://xmlfile.tools/support for help.
Snap permissions control file access. Use Open in the app if a file manager does not recognize the file type. The home permission permits ordinary non-hidden files you own in your home directory. For external drives under /media, /run/media or /mnt, connect the optional interface with: sudo snap connect xml-editor:removable-media. If the original XML cannot be written, keep your edits open and check the source location and permissions. In the full editor, Tools > Save XML project can preserve the document and settings in a separate project file; this does not save changes to the original XML. The full editor does not provide a separate Save As action.
